[from unidentified newspaper article, ca. March 1955]
Mrs. Wilda J. Smith, 89, Eldon, is shown with a quilt, the result of her chief hobby. To date she has pieced 200 quilt tops and continues to piece the quilts for five generations.
Mrs. Smith was born March 19, 1866, in Kentucky. She is the mother of seven children, six of them living, and has 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
On March 19, this year, she celebrated her 89th birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John T. Judd, and husband, of Eugene.
Those present included a son, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Smith of Columbia; granddaughters and families, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stebbins and Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Yocom, Eugene; great-grandchildren, Sally and Lila Yocom, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hager, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Feldman, Eldon; and great-great-grandchildren, Mike and Steve Hager, Eugene, and Gary and Jackie Feldman of Eldon.
Mrs. Smith is now living at the Jobe Rest Home in Eldon.
[Contributed by P. Teter If you now possess a Wilda Smith quilt, please let me know. It would be nice to have photos of the many quilts and patterns she used. I have one of her quilts with a flower basket pattern and will add a photo of that quilt in the near future.]
